Comedic one-acts, new reading series, and a writers' showcase round out an exciting line-up
COLUMBUS, OHIO (November 4, 2009)—Theatre Daedalus unveiled today a full slate of shows for their 2009–2010 season. Opening the season is a new production making its world premiere in Columbus, followed by three established contemporary American plays ranging in scope from stirring drama to wry comedy. A fundraiser showcase of new plays in January and multiple free staged readings round out the company's sophomore campaign.
The season launches on November 22 with the world premiere of Unanswered, We Ride, a one-woman show created by Daedalus co-founder Jaclyn Villano. After the writers' showcase in January, Edward Albee's Three Tall Women follows in March 2010. David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross and David Ives' All in the Timing are scheduled for May and August, 2010, respectively. All four productions are slated to be held at Wild Goose Creative, 2491 Summit Street.
"I'm thrilled with our show selections for this season," said Theatre Daedalus co-founder and Managing Director Jeremy Sony. "Our mission is to cultivate and present thought-provoking works, both new and enduring, for the stage. These selected plays mesh perfectly with that mission."
Villano, the company's Artistic Director, agreed. "I think we have crafted a varied, vibrant season that holds something for everyone. These plays bring a mix of depth and levity, comedy and drama, original work and lasting favorites."
Unanswered, We Ride was created in workshop by Villano in preparation for Daedalus' June 2009 production, Project 10. Villano expanded the piece from its original ten-minute incarnation to encompass a much larger story. Cleveland Public Theatre has accepted an alternate version of the play (under the title Wave) for their Little Box staged reading series this month. Wave will be performed in Cleveland by Daedalus ensemble member Marla Williams, under the direction of company co-founder Michael Parsons.
"This is a wonderful new piece of theater," Parsons said. "Jaclyn has crafted an excellent story with depth and resonance, and it's being taken to the next level with our November production here in Columbus." Unanswered, We Ride is directed by central Ohio theatre veteran April Olt, and features Theatre Daedalus ensemble member Sonda Staley Lewis.
The company will ring in 2010 with Caught in the Act, a one-night only showcase of short plays all written, produced and performed within 48 hours. Acclaimed writers from around the country will join the Daedalus playwrights for this company fundraiser. The show premieres at 7:00 p.m. on January 9, 2010, at the Van Fleet Theatre in the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 S. Franklin St. in downtown Columbus.
Also in 2010, the company will unveil its Saturday Afternoon Reading Series—quarterly staged readings which are free and open to the public. "We have received new plays from around the country from writers seeking a stage," said Parsons, the company's Playwright-in-Residence. "These free public readings are designed to promote new works throughout the year, and to showcase the talents of our incredible acting ensemble."
